Students will be graded on two components: the tools they create and the artwork they produce with those tools. Each component is worth 50% of the final grade.
Tool Creation (50 points)
- Craftsmanship & Functionality (25 points)
- Tools are well-constructed with attention to detail
- Tools are functional and demonstrate understanding of their intended use
- Proper use of materials and techniques (wood shaping, sanding, 3D printing, epoxy putty, etc.)
- Finished surfaces are refined and suitable for contact with clay
- Range & Iteration (25 points)
- Creation of multiple tools from the "Makes" list
- Evidence of refinement and iteration in tool design based on testing and use
- Tools demonstrate personalized modifications to suit your creative direction
Ceramic Artwork (50 points)
- Experimentation & Creative Exploration (25 points)
- Creation of a series of objects (not just one piece) that demonstrate exploration and experimentation
- Evidence of testing tools in multiple ways with willingness to take creative risks and try unexpected approaches
- Range of investigation showing depth of engagement with tools' potential
- Artwork shows progression with clear connection between tool iteration and evolving ceramic work
- Evidence of honing a specific creative direction and making thoughtful decisions about which tools/techniques to pursue further
- Craft & Execution (25 points)
- Appropriate level of craft for exploratory work
- Objects demonstrate competent use of forming and shaping techniques
- Understanding of clay properties and behavior
- Quality of construction and attention to detail in ceramic work
- Demonstration of technical skill development throughout the project
