Sprig molds are small press molds, usually made out of bisqued ceramic. They are typically used for making repeatable small pieces of textured or detail clay, called “sprigs”. Those sprigs are usually then pressed or scored and slipped onto the surface of the work.
Sprig molds can be a range of sizes, but they cannot have undercuts. Typically they are shallow, low-relief molds.
A bisqued sprig mold is related to a bisque stamp, but a sprig is sort of a stamp’s opposite. Bisqued stamps press into the wet clay, whereas with a sprig mold, you are pressing wet clay into the bisqed mold.
They could be made from natural forms, 3D printed shapes, or anything you can press clay into wihthout having undercuts.
